Oscar Wilde once said "Each man kills the thing he loves the most".   It makes sense.   Think about it... what happens when everything you want is right is right in front of you? When finally what you have been asking for is within your grasp?  How do you possibly handle having the very thing that you desire?  This can be very scary for most people.  My favorite author Paulo Coehlo puts it this way -  “The mere possibility of getting what we want fills the soul of the ordinary person with guilt. We look around at all those who have failed to get what they want and feel that we do not deserve to get what we want either. We forget about all the obstacles we overcame, all the suffering we endured, all the things we had to give up in order to get this far.” (Alchemist viii)  The truth is we are operating out of fear; what if I fail? What if I can't handle it?  What if I don't deserve it ? What if? What if? What if?   These "what if's"  stop us from ultimatley getting what we want -
we end up destroying it.
Sometimes it can be just as simple as taking something/someone for granted.
Sadly, most people when they are just about to get what it is they hoped for, what it is they really want, go on to "commit a series of stupid mistakes" and end up killing preciesly what they love.

What a terrible thing it is to wound someone

you really care for -and to do it so unconsciously.
